A new children's book takes readers on a journey teaching
about the importance of human connection, communication,
and the need to balance our time on technology. The 'Tangles,
written by Dr. Janson, follows the story of students from
another planet as they embark on a field trip to Earth. Upon
arrival the students are shocked to see that humans have been
overtaken by a mysterious presence that seems to be
"tangling" their communication. The students cannot
understand how the humans have been so overwhelmed by
this presence which they refer to as 'tangles based on the
rectangle-shape of the various devices being used by the
humans.
The catalyst for the book was a mix of Dr. Janson's observations
within the schools coupled with ongoing research highlighting
the dangers of constant tech use. It is well known that changes
have occurred in how our youth are communicating. Adults are
also changing their communication habits to a manner that
favors text messages and emails over one-to-one
conversations. This trend is likely to continue as over 60% of the
worldwide population owns a mobile phone, one in four
children under age six has a mobile phone and 95% of
teenagers own a mobile device. From a neutral and creative
perspective, The 'Tangles shines a light on how technology
influences human connectivity and simply aims to increase
awareness and balance.
