Newly Remodeled Greenwood Community Center is NOW OPEN!

Our first experience at Kid City

By Bryana Schreiber January 26, 2017
With two very active little boys, we're always seeking out new places to play. We've traveled to indoor playgrounds all around the Indy area - Trader's Point, Lakeview Church, etc. - but I've been hoping for an educational indoor play area on the south side of Indy since we moved to Franklin with my 6 month old son nearly 3.5 years ago. Finally, my wish has come true!

Perhaps like me, you've taken your kids to the Greenwood Community Center in the past to play in the gym. The center used to open up the basketball courts in the mornings for toddler play, and my boys liked climbing around on the mats and running in circles. When the center closed last year for the multi-million dollar renovation we were sad to lose open gym time, but I was thrilled to hear about the extensive updates that would be made.

When we heard about the grand reopening on Saturday, January 14, our family was eager to see the renovated space. We weren't going to miss this, and let me tell you it was worth the wait.

As soon as you arrive in the lobby you'll be amazed by the fresh, colorful design and welcoming layout. The re-opening was busy with people buzzing around, but it was so fun to see families enjoying this space together. My boys went right to playing and exploring all of the awesome play spaces. While my sons are 2 and 4 years old, the STEAM-focused (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) learning activities are creative and challenging for kids of all ages. For those of you who didn't make it out for the grand re-opening, you must go explore!

Here are just some of the great things you'll find:
Downstairs
Indoor playground: Places to climb, slide and just be silly.

Two-story Luckey Climber: You've likely seen the one at the Commons in Columbus, WonderLab in Bloomington or at Playscape in the Children's Museum. Kids love them!
Giant foam building blocks: Blocks, noodles, and all kinds of shapes to create something interesting.

Bead roller coaster: A giant version of a bead maze.

Lego building area:
I mean, seriously, what's better than blocks?

Interactive sports screen: My oldest son certainly got his wiggles out playing virtual soccer and volleyball with his new best friends.

Play grocery store complete with checkout lanes and a play kitchen: This was one of my favorite areas to watch kids interact as some shopped and others pretended to be cashiers.
Craft area - Paper, glue, colors, glitter - everything you need to make something Pinterest-worthy.

Outside
Musical fun: It was raining when we went, but we can't wait to go back and check this out!

In case you're wondering, the bathrooms are very nice. There's a private nursing room, and even a small kitchen area.

You're just going to love this place!
I know we could spend hours exploring at the new center, and we can't wait to go back!  Next time we'll also check out the fitness equipment and basketball courts - there's fun to be had for kids and adults alike.
